Obama links US interests with Pak-Afghan future

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama said Wednesday the leaders of Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari and Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai had renewed their commitment in a three-way summit here at White House to fight extremism threatening all three nations.

"I am pleased that these two men, elected leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan, fully appreciate the seriousness of the threat that we face, and have reaffirmed their commitment to confronting it," Obama said.

Obama said the three nations are cooperating in new ways to fight terrorism and to improve the lives of Pakistanis and Afghans.

The president said the governments must cooperate in fighting insurgents who control parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan and “deny them the space'' to threaten local residents or Americans.

US president said Karzai and Zardari recognize the seriousness of the threat. The US president spoke at the White House, flanked by President Asif Ali Zardari and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, after their three-way summit.
