Australia announce squad for T20 World Cup

MELBOURNE: Australia named the following Twenty20 squad on Tuesday for next month's World Cup in England:

Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke, Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Hopes, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Brett Lee, Peter Siddle, Andrew Symonds, David Warner, Shane Watson.

Pace bowler Brett Lee and all rounder Shane Watson have been included in Australia's squad for next month's tournament, despite not having bowled at international level since last year.

Lee and Watson are expected to bowl in Australia's Twenty20 match against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.

Lee has not bowled for Australia since the Boxing Day test against South Africa last December after suffering ankle and foot problems.

"Brett Lee is progressing well and will return to international cricket in Thursday's ... game against Pakistan," Andrew Hilditch, head of the selection panel, said in a statement.

"We expect it will take him a few games to regain his rhythm after the extended break, but the medical and coaching staff are very confident Brett will be back to his best for this tournament."

Watson has not bowled since last November due to stress fractures in his back and the 27-year-old has been playing as a specialist batsman only in the one-day series against Pakistan.

"Building up to this selection, Shane Watson has returned to the one-day side and performed extra well with the bat in the series in the UAE," Hilditch added.

"He'll return to bowling in Thursday's game there and adds strength and versatility to the side."

All rounder Andrew Symonds has also been included after a series of off-field incidents resulted in him being ruled out of contention until his behaviour improved.

"At his best Andrew Symonds is one of the best (Twenty20) players in the world.

"In limited opportunities in the UAE he showed ... his ability to win games for Australia."

Explosive opening batsman David Warner has also been named for the June 5-21 tournament to give the team a fast start at the top of the order, Hilditch said.

Seven fans hurt in Talladega car crashed

NASCAR car crashed

Seven fans were injured after Carl Edwards’ car crashed against the catch fence following contact with Brad Keselowski on the last lap of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Track officials confirmed that eight people were treated, although one of them was for a medical condition and not as a consequence of being hit by debris from the violent impact that Edwards’ car made with the fence a few metres short of crossing the finish line.

Edwards got turned sideways by eventual race-winner Brad Keselowski after he tried to block an overtaking move by the 25-year-old. The Roush Fenway driver’s car became airborne and was then hit by Ryan Newman’s machine, sending it towards the grandstands.

The catch fence was severely damaged in the incident but still held up well and prevented the car from getting into the stands.

“After the incident that occurred on the last lap, we are treating approximately eight patients from injuries received from flying debris; the injuries appear to be minor and non life-threatening,” said the track’s medical director Dr Bobby Lewis.

“One female patient is being transported by air, because of traffic, for further evaluation and treatment.”

Later in the evening a track spokeswoman confirmed that six of the patients had been released, while two of them were seeking further treatment with their own local physicians after being evaluated for possible minor fractures in extremities.

The woman who was airlifted to a local hospital sustained some facial injuries and is believed to be the one most seriously affected.

Edwards walked out of the crash without injury and eventually ran across the finish line on foot.

Sehwag Shuffles New Zealand in Starts

Hamilton: Virender Sehwag took the attack back to the opposition and took the NZ bowlers to the sword from the word go bringing up India’s 50 in the 8th over. Sehwag also brought up his 50 and set up a solid base with Gambhir for the middle order to follow.

In the death of the NZ innings, Peter McGlashan went all guns blazing and notched up his half century to up the tempo for New Zealand and put them in a competitive position. He scored 56 off just 32 deliveries and put up a 95 run partnership with Eliott who scored 35 off 27 balls. The duo stepped on the gas and freed their arms to end the NZ innings at 271/5 in 47 overs.

The revised target for India is 281 runs in 47 overs which is just about 6 runs an over.

Rain had played spoilsport again in the fourth ODI at Hamilton and the players had to rush off the field twice. There was no loss of play after the first interruption but after a sudden shower soon after players got back on the ground reduced the game to 47 overs.
Ishant Sharma struck twice in quick succession to put New Zealand on the backfoot after the hosts took off strongly riding on their swashbuckling openers, Ryder and McCullum.

Prior to the onslaught by McGlashan and Eliott, Ishant Sharma had induced an edge off the shoulder of Jacob Oram’s (1) blade and then deceived Martin Guptill (25) with his pace. Guptill was caught by Dinesh Karthik at deep third man.

Zaheer Khan was also rewarded for his brilliant bowling consistently when Brendon McCullum was wrapped on the pads plumb in front of the wickets for 71. He had started off pretty slow but took the charge after setting his eyes in and had pummeled the Indian bowling to all corners of the park.

McCullum’s knock could well be credited to the sloppy effort in the field by the Indian team. He was dropped twice by different fieldsmen but the bowler remained the same - Yuvraj Singh. Dhoni had missed a stumping chance early in the innings and then it was Sehwag who had dropped the batsman off the same bowler. He also took the NZ total past the 150 run mark.

Earlier, after toiling hard for over 19 overs, the Indian team finally got a breakthrough in the form of the explosive Jesse Ryder who was caught by Suresh Raina off Yuvraj Singh. He scored 46.

Soon after that, Ross Taylor perished to Yusuf Pathan when he caught by Rohit Sharma in the deep for 5. Two quick wickets suddenly seem to have put India back in the game after the NZ openers looked like batting India out of the game completely.

New Zealand had got off to a steady start with both their openers Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum playing cautiously and aggressively, Ryder in particular. The duo took the team’s total past the 100 run mark in the 18th over.

The Kiwi skipper had won the toss and decided to give his team a chance to bat for the first time in the ODI series. India have batted first on all the three occasions in the ODI series and India have managed to post big totals on the board.
